2019 Clan Coaching Spotlight - Martin van der Heever

Next up we introduce one of our senior mens coaches for the year. He is a relatively new member of the club and someone we are very happy to have on board with us this year. Today we are happy to spotlight Martin van der Heever.

What are you coaching?

Senior men, and scrum coach.

When did you start playing rugby?

I started playing rugby at school at the age of 6.

Brief playing/ coaching history?

I played professional rugby in South Africa, France and Ireland, I also have coached at a school, amateur, semi-professional and professional level.

I played 4 years for my University in South Africa, ( Shimlas),  a couple of seasons for the Cheetahs, (Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup- Professional), one season for the Griffons, ( Vodacom Cup- Professional), a couple of seasons for Stade Toulouse in France, (French Top 14 and Heineken Cup), one and a half seasons for Leinster in Ireland, (Pro 12 and Heineken Cup), and a pre season with the Kings, (Super Rugby) in South Africa, where i got injured and ended my career.

What brought you to the Clan?

I moved to Canada with my wife, and still wanted to be part of a rugby club. I asked a good friend of mine if he knows of any good clubs in Edmonton, and here I am.

What got you into coaching?

Basically I still wanted to be part of the game after I stopped playing, and there is no better feeling and way to give back to this wonderful game, then to teach and coach others, what I have learned over the years.

What's your coaching philosophy?

1. Culture comes first, (Rugby and club)

2. Check your ego, (Stay humble in everything you do)

3. Empower you players, (Give you players more responsibility)

4. Be Smart, be secretive, (Always have a back up plan)

5. Confront your weaknesses

6. Expect the unexpected

Do you have any special talents that people aren't aware of?

I can help myself around a 6 string, harmonica and a concertina.
